Máj Department Store – Controversy, but also Cutting-Edge Technology

In the Czech Republic, few buildings have sparked as much discussion this year. And no wonder — the Máj department store is located in the very heart of Prague, right on Národní třída. Ever since it was built in the 1970s, it has divided opinions: some admire its functionalist architecture, others see it as a brutalist socialist relic. Its massive renovation over the past two years has triggered waves of controversy among conservationists, modernists, locals, and tourists alike. To top it off, just before reopening, two eight-meter butterfly sculptures — designed to resemble Spitfire aircraft and honor WWII Czech pilots — were installed by renowned artist David Černý, whose works never fail to stir passionate reactions.

Unfortunately, the public debate has often overshadowed the fact that Máj is now a truly exceptional shopping center — not only thanks to its prime location, but also because it has become a live showroom of cutting-edge technologies offering new levels of interaction, design, and user experience.

When it came to installing large digital signage screens, the goal was to provide an interactive and visually compelling way for visitors to navigate the entertainment center and access information about events and offerings across its floors. At the same time, effective promotion and modern technology implementation were key requirements.

Betting on Philips and intuitive software
Philips became the central technology partner in this digital transformation. Selected for its trusted reputation and reliability in commercial display systems, Philips offered high-resolution screens (up to 4K) that deliver sharp, detailed images — even in large formats. The displays were chosen for their durability, 24/7 operation capability, and adaptability to the dynamic environment of the center. They were installed in highly visible locations throughout Máj to immediately grab the attention of visitors.

“Philips displays have helped us create an environment that is highly efficient in communicating with our visitors. The screens integrate beautifully with the interior design and allow us to present content in a truly attention-grabbing way. We especially appreciate the ease of content management, which gives us flexibility and responsiveness to customer needs. We are also satisfied with the cost-efficiency of the solution,” says Lukáš Palek of Infinite Experience Group, who oversees Heroes Park and the synchronization of nearly fifty screens on the ground floor. He also praises the ArtemisOne software — a central control system that enables intuitive content management, real-time updates, and monitoring of each screen individually.

The installation process also involved solving a number of unique challenges — such as placing screens into decorative frames to blend them with the interior design. Not only did aesthetics need to be considered, but also technical aspects like cooling and service access. Some displays are mounted on complex structural frameworks supporting multiple screens, requiring careful attention to stability and safety.

Next time you visit Máj, look beyond the trendy shops and special offers — take note of the sophisticated integration of technology throughout the space. With more than fifty digital screens in place, Máj offers an immersive, interactive experience that guides visitors through various attractions and zones of the entertainment center.

The implementation of Philips digital signage at the Máj shopping center not only modernized the space but also significantly improved visitor interaction, strengthened brand identity, and allowed for efficient management of digital content — all while maintaining sensitivity to the building’s design and atmosphere.

Come and experience it for yourself — right on Národní třída, in the very center of Prague, at the iconic Máj.
